Frequently Asked
Questions About EPS
What is EPS?
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is a rigid, closed cell, thermoplastic
material which can be made into a wide range of shapes and used in a
variety of applications including insulated food containers,
protective packaging and insulation for buildings.
Why is EPS the right material for my packaging requirements?
EPS is lightweight, durable, versatile and offers incredible
performance and value. It can be moulded into almost any shape. Its
outstanding shock absorbency and compressive resistance, means it
provides excellent protection for delicate products. The thermal
insulating properties of EPS keeps chilled food fresh, making it the
ideal packaging material for fish, vegetables, meat and fruit. These
insulating properties are also widely used for building insulation
in the construction industry.
Can I have my logo on an EPS product?
Yes, your company logo can be moulded onto your EPS product.
Can EPS be recycled?
Yes, EPS is recycled widely and is re used in the manufacture of EPS
and in polystyrene products.
Why is EPS so light?
EPS is 98% air, making it one of the lightest packaging materials
available.
Why does EPS have such good insulating
properties?
The closed cell foam structure of EPS consists of microscopically
small polystyrene bubbles which trap air, thereby creating the
insulating properties. It is the most cost effective insulating
material compared with other commonly used materials such as paper,
cardboard, glass fibre and wood. Its average thermal conductivity is
0.037W/(m.k).
How does EPS packaging impact on the
environment?
A Melbourne University study, “Life Cycle Analysis of Produce Boxes:
Comparison of Expanded Polystyrene and Corrugated Cardboard (1996)”,
confirmed that globally the environmental impact of EPS produce
boxes is less than fibreboard boxes performing the same task.
What is the difference between standard and custom packaging?
Standard packaging is available in a range of sizes and
can be purchased ex stock, in small or large quantities. Custom
products are designed specifically to meet your individual
requirements. They are produced only for you and run on your own
tooling. We will arrange the building of the tool. |
